[Intro] Early this morning When you knocked upon my door Early this morning When you knocked upon my door And I hear the wind begin to blow And I know it is time to go [Verse1] Early this morning When you knocked upon my door Early this morning When you knocked upon my door And I say, "Hello Satan, I I believe it is time to go" The shadow stretches long upon the floor There is no use in locking up the door The heavy bargain has been struck once more And I am stepping out into the roar [Pre-Chorus] See, see you don't see why And you would dog me 'round Say, don't see why People dog me around It must be that old evil spirit So deep down in your ground Rising up to take me through the town [Chorus] Me and the devil walkin' side by side Me and the devil walkin' side by side And I'm gonna see my man Until I get satisfied No turning back from this dark ride We keep on moving through the endless tide [Verse2] See, see you don't see why And you would dog me 'round Say, don't see why People dog me around It must be that old evil spirit So deep down in your ground Chasing every footsteps on the sound With nowhere left for a poor soul to bound [Chorus] Me and the devil walkin' side by side Me and the devil walkin' side by side And I'm gonna see my man Until I get satisfied No turning back from this dark ride We keep on moving through the endless tide [Bridge] You may bury my body Down by the highway side You may bury my body Down by the highway side So my old evil spirit Can Greyhound bus that ride So my old evil spirit Can catch that midnight ride [Chorus] Me and the devil walkin' side by side Me and the devil walkin' side by side And I'm gonna see my man Until I get satisfied No turning back from this dark ride We keep on moving through the endless tide [Outro] Down by the highway side Where the lonesome spirits hide Catching that Greyhound bus to ride Far away into the midnight tide Goodbye to this mortal pride
